Hi All,

At a recent county board meeting in the Woodlands a presentation was made to the Bord na Nog clubs on the problem facing the county due to the shortage of referees.

Some points that were highlighted

  • Referees in the county has reduced from 106 referees in 2014 to 55 in 2024.
  • 1292 games played at Bord Na Nog in 2023 between 53 referees.
  • The age profile is increasing every year.
  • Of the 22 clubs in the west division only 13 clubs have an active referee.
  • 11 adult clubs have not provided a referee in the past 10 years
Why Referee?

There is a referee pathway clearly defined for progression to Munster and National refereeing panels, to achieve this, referees must meet criteria within their own County (i.e., refereed at adult senior level and maintain good fitness levels).

There are many benefits to refereeing including:

• General Fitness.
• Camaraderie with refereeing colleagues.
• Getting to know club members outside of your own club circle.
• Potential for progression to referee at County level & potentially Intercounty Level.
• At Intercounty level these is a possibility of foreign travel to referee games.
• Having best seat in the house to observe the greatest of skill levels being practiced.
