History was created in Ardagh on Saturday afternoon when our Junior hurlers won the Lynkeo Civil Engineering Ltd. West Junior B Championship for the first time in many years.
On a glorious day for hurling, we lined up against near neighbours and fierce rivals Granagh Ballingarry. Having lost to the same opposition in the group stages, it was with a very healthy respect that we approached this game against the reigning West Champions.
It was a cagey affair for the opening 15 minutes of the first half, with the scores tied at 0-3 apiece. After 21 minutes the scores were tied at 0-5 apiece. Croagh hit a purple patch over the next 3 minutes to score 4 unanswered points. By half time, we had extended the lead to 5 points (0-11 to 0-6).
We had a blistering start to the second half to open up an 8 point lead (0-14 to 0-6) and never looked back from there. The final scoreline was 0-21 to 0-10
Cian Sheehy in goal was coolness personified, delivering pin point puck outs, calm under the dropping ball and stopping a 20 metre free at a vital stage. Our full back line fought like demons and put their bodies on the line time and again. Jamie Burke at corner back gave a man of the match performance. Our half back line were dominant under Granagh Ballingarry puck outs and were the launch pad for attacks into the forwards. Our midfield duo were outstanding again. Their work rate and intensity both in and out of possession has been superb over the last few matches, not to mention their ability to take scores when the opportunity arises.Up front, our half forward line worked tirelessly to create and take scoring opportunities themselves, but also to prevent the opposition from delivering ball into their forward line. Our inside forward line thrived in the open spaces of the superb pitch in Ardagh and tormented their markers with relentless running, tackling and score taking.
After the match, Johnny Walsh presented the cup to the victorious Croagh Kilfinny captain Padraic O'Gorman. Later in the evening, David Lynch from Lynkeo Civil Engineering Ltd. presented the man of the match trophy to Jamie Burke.
Also pictured are captains Padraic O'Gorman and Eoin Enright with referee Kieran Guinea.
We now progress to the county quarter final where the opposition is yet to be decided.
Congratulations to the team and management on a famous victory for the club. Croagh Kilfinny abu.
